Vocational education in Germany, commonly known as “Ausbildung” or apprenticeship, is a program where students are directed into specific fields of work and spend three years as apprentices (vocational students) in their chosen profession. Notably, they do not have to finance their education themselves.

In the typical setup, students spend two days of the week attending theoretical lessons at a vocational school (Berufskolleg), while the remaining three days are spent on practical training at a certified workplace.

During their vocational education, students receive an increasing salary each year to cover their living expenses. After completing the program, they become qualified professionals (Qualifizierte Fachkraft). Qualified workers in Germany are in high demand and earn more than unqualified individuals.

Upon successfully completing vocational training, those who finish an advanced certification course, such as the Master Craftsman certificate (Meisterbrief), gain the right to establish their own business (Fachbetrieb) in their field and train other apprentices (Ausbildungsstätte).
