Accommodation and Living in Germany

There are several types of accommodation options in Germany, including Detached Houses, Rental Apartments, Dormitories, and Shared Rooms.

Studentenwerk dormitories are commonly preferred by students in Germany. If you are not interested in private dormitory options or cannot find space there, you can always rent a shared apartment or rent your own apartment. In Germany’s larger cities, 9% of residents are tenants, so there are many options for accommodation, and the rental process is carefully followed according to procedures.

When we talk about private accommodation, another term you should know is WG. This concept is similar to the idea of a few friends renting a house together in Turkey, but in Germany, the term WG (Wohngemeinschaft) refers to living together in a shared apartment. However, there is one key difference: in Germany, you do not need to know your housemates in advance. This means that in a WG, you can share your room/apartment with completely different people, from different schools, departments, or even people who may not be students.

In private accommodation, you will come across four different options:

  1. WG-Zimmer:
This option refers to having your own room in an apartment where you will share common areas such as the kitchen and bathroom with others.
  2. Zimmer-Wohnung:
This refers to a studio apartment with your own kitchen and bathroom.
  3. Wohnung:
A larger apartment with 2 or more rooms (note that the living room is also considered a room).
  4. Haus:
A detached house, which is independent and typically more spacious.
